Sharing local history and natural heritage through outdoor interpretation design

The Charter Chest path, a new path linking Braemar to the car park at the Keiloch via the historic Queen’s Drive, under the steep Lion’s Face cliff, and on to the Old Brig o’Dee military bridge at Invercauld.

The interpretation design for the Charter Chest Path panel, created for the Cairngorms National Park Authority, introduces visitors to the area’s local nature and history, encouraging curiosity, connection and responsible enjoyment of the path and surrounding routes. The wider project involved Invercauld Estate, Braemar Local History Group and Braemar Tourism Group.

project brief

The aim was to create an engaging and accessible interpretation panel that would help visitors understand where they are, and why this place matters.

With content covering local nature and history, the panel needed to communicate information clearly to a broad audience, including walkers, cyclists, day visitors and local residents.

The design also needed to feel welcoming and informative, using straightforward graphics and a clear visual hierarchy to make the content easy to explore.

The approach

Interpreting the Landscape

Working with content supplied by the Cairngorms National Park Authority, I developed a clear, engaging panel design that brings together the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

Thoughtful layout, typography and visual hierarchy make the information easy to explore and understand, helping visitors connect with the landscape and its stories.
