Exploring Atlantic Salmon and River Conservation Through Interpretation Design
Two large-format interpretation panels designed for the River Dee Trust, highlighting the conservation of Atlantic salmon and the restoration of the River Muick. The panels are displayed side by side at the Spittal of Glen Muick Visitor Centre on the Balmoral Estate, which is opened and maintained by the Balmoral Ranger Service.
project brief
The aim was to communicate the River Dee Trust’s conservation work in an engaging and accessible way, helping visitors understand the challenges facing Atlantic salmon and the importance of restoring healthy river habitats.
One panel explores the life cycle of Atlantic salmon, the threats they face and their cultural significance. The other highlights efforts to restore the River Muick, including native tree planting, habitat improvements and work to reconnect rivers with their natural surroundings.
The approach
Making Conservation Clear and Engaging
Working with the River Dee Trust, I designed two complementary interpretation panels that bring together detailed conservation information, illustrations and photography.
Clear visual hierarchy, accessible graphics and considered typography help visitors explore complex environmental topics, creating a cohesive and engaging display within the visitor centre.
